TIG and MIG are the two welding processes you'll hear about most often for boats, trailers, and general metal repair, and they're suited to different jobs. Neither one is universally "better" — the right choice depends on the material, the finish you need, and how the repaired item will be used.
How MIG Welding Works
MIG welding (metal inert gas welding) feeds a continuous wire electrode through a gun while a shielding gas protects the weld pool. It's faster than TIG welding and generally more forgiving for thicker steel, which makes it a common choice for trailer frames, structural steel, and fencing where speed and strength matter more than a polished finish.
How TIG Welding Works
TIG welding (tungsten inert gas welding) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with separately fed filler material, giving the welder much more control over heat and weld appearance. It runs slower but produces a cleaner, more precise weld, which is why it's the preferred method for aluminum, stainless steel, and thin-gauge metal.
Why It Matters for Aluminum Boats
Aluminum hulls, pontoons, and T-tops are usually best welded with TIG because the process gives the control needed to avoid warping thin aluminum sheet and produces a cleaner weld on visible surfaces. A rushed MIG weld on thin aluminum is more likely to burn through or leave a rough, weaker joint.
Why MIG Still Makes Sense for Trailers and Structural Steel
For thicker steel trailer frames, structural brackets, and fencing, MIG welding's speed and strength are usually the better fit, especially when the weld will be painted or otherwise hidden and appearance matters less than raw strength and turnaround time.
Stainless Steel Considerations
Stainless steel marine hardware and fixtures can be welded with either process depending on thickness and finish requirements, though TIG is generally preferred when a clean, corrosion-resistant weld on visible hardware is the priority.

Because the right process depends on material and finish requirements as much as anything else, it's reasonable to ask a mobile welder which method they plan to use and why. A welder experienced in both processes can match the technique to your specific boat, trailer, or fabrication project rather than defaulting to whichever machine happens to be loaded on the truck that day.
